Social media stats and the importance of monthly active users
Social media is widely used all across the globe. For instance, reports from this year claim that around 4.9 billion people have social media profiles. By 2027, projections indicate that there will be about 5.85 billion users. This has to do with both the growing world population and the expansion of internet access. Specifically, the spread of 5G is expected to dramatically impact how people use social media and how many people have access.
But just looking at the total numbers doesn’t necessarily tell the whole story. In some ways, it’s more important to look at the monthly active users.
Which site has the most active users?
Looking at monthly active users helps to sort through some of the noise. There may be billions of Facebook profiles, but how many of them are real? How many of them have been abandoned? For example, there are countless people who have Facebook accounts that they haven’t logged into for months or even years. As a business owner who is advertising on the platform, these people are not really included in your potential audience.
But when you look at monthly active users, you’ll find that Facebook has the highest totals. There are roughly 2.9 million people who use the platform every month. Next is YouTube, with 2.5 million, followed by WhatsApp, with 2 million. Instagram is tied there with 2 million, which is especially impressive because Meta owns both Instagram and Facebook. While there is certainly a lot of overlap in these user groups, it also shows that Meta has two of the top four spots. TikTok comes in sixth with 1 million active monthly users.
Leveraging multiple sites
One thing that becomes clear when looking at these numbers is that the greatest impact can be had by putting content on all of these various sites. Social media marketing doesn’t just mean using Facebook or TikTok exclusively. A comprehensive campaign should have tailor-made content for all of the different platforms where that potential audience is most active.
This is why it’s also important for business owners to analyze their audience carefully. Which apps are they using? Are there any trends to consider – such as the trend of young people using Facebook less often in recent years? How does this change the marketing efforts that your company puts into each different platform?
