Google involved in major AI technology lawsuit
Microsoft was recently sued, along with OpenAI, for its use of patented written material to train their artificial intelligence algorithm. That lawsuit came from the New York Times, but that is certainly not the only publication that has been used in creating this technology. It will be interesting to see what this means moving forward, and it also may just be the beginning. Already, more massive lawsuits are starting up around AI, with the most recent targeting tech superpower Google.
This lawsuit is a bit different, though, in that it has been started by Singular Computing. The founder of that company allegedly had meetings with Google twice in the last 14 years, but they did not partner together. However, Singular Computing says that Google used its architecture to help Google’s own AI technology advance and that Google did this illegally. The lawsuit claims damages of $7 billion.
What happened in those meetings?
According to Joseph Bates of Singular Computing, he showed Google proprietary developments in computing tech. Google decided to pass, thinking that it wasn’t a good fit. Bates now says that Google is using that technology anyway for various AI features relating to web searches, Gmail messages, Google translation capabilities and other such applications. He is essentially claiming that Google saw his ideas at Singular and stole them, rather than partnering with his company, leading to the explosion of AI in the last year or so.
Google, for its part, says the opposite. They claim that the Tensor Processing Units, which are at the heart of this disagreement, were independently developed. A spokesperson for Google claims that the court case is going to “set things straight” and that they will be able to show that they have not stolen Singular’s technology, but simply developed something similar on their own.
