Focusing on Google’s goals with SEO
When many people consider search engine optimization (SEO), they start by thinking about their own goals. Maybe they want to widen their reach to a greater potential audience. Maybe they want to create more conversions. Maybe they’re just focused on providing helpful information to people who may be interested in their products and services. It is important to consider what you want to accomplish so that you can create a comprehensive plan to reach those goals.
But at the same time, it is also important to consider Google’s goals. The bulk of search engine optimization is done to rank on Google search results pages. This means that SEO needs to be done in a way that is in line with the tech company’s vision and what Google itself is trying to accomplish.
The 2023 core algorithm update
The most recent update to Google’s algorithm happened in 2023. This was a core update to the algorithm, and reports say that will prioritize content that is:
- Written for the reader, not the search engine.
- Reliable, trustworthy and dependable.
- Helpful to the target audience.
In other words, you shouldn’t just be thinking about what keywords people will use or how many searches are conducted every hour. This information can help you identify the keywords that you should target or the types of content that may gain traction. But it can’t be your main goal.
Instead, your overall goal should be to create helpful and reliable content for your target audience. It can include keywords that will help to increase traffic, but it should not be fluff content just for the sake of getting more keywords on your site. In fact, some tactics can actually be detrimental to your Google ranking. But if you focus on publishing useful content that provides value to the reader, those are the types of sites and pages Google wants to promote.
