The March Google Core Update targets spam
Google has recently put out a handful of updates, including the March 2024 Core Update and a spam update. This happens on a fairly consistent basis, and Google’s algorithm is always evolving. That’s why it’s so important to consider how they change the algorithm, what the updates mean and how your SEO tactics may help or hinder your efforts. You always want to focus on creating the type of content Google is most likely to recommend to your audience.
Google’s Director of Product Management is Elizabeth Tucker. She recently wrote about the update, stating that they are trying to address abusive practices with low-quality content. They’re also focusing on spam and content that isn’t original. Google is trying to cut down on this type of content significantly in 2024, and Tucker noted that “we expect that the combination of this update and our previous efforts will collectively reduce low-quality, unoriginal content in search results by 40%.”
Focus on quality
When many business owners think about search engine optimization, they focus on quantity. They know that they need to create more content or use more keywords. They think that they’re just not doing enough to get the audience that they’re looking for.
But Google’s focus is always on quality. The search engine is trying to present the audience with high-quality content that answers their questions and gives them the information that they’re looking for. Ideally, executives at Google would probably like it if the person who ran the search always chose the first result because that would mean that the search engine was highly accurate. This may not be a realistic goal, but it’s clear that Google is less concerned with how many keywords you have on a page and more concerned with how valuable the information is to the reader.
This means that there has to be a balance. Using the correct keywords is important. If your site isn’t getting enough traction, adding new keywords may be beneficial. It’s also important to create fresh content on a consistent basis, so adding more content is often a good idea.
But don’t just do this indiscriminately, adding more generic content for the sake of putting something on the page. Instead, look for high-quality content that has been well crafted and presents your readers with easy-to-understand information on the specific topic that they’re searching for. When you balance this mindset with a few relevant keywords, your site will be very attractive to Google’s new algorithm update.
