To reach all ages, you need content on multiple platforms
If you’re trying to draw more traffic to your website, you know that additional content may be the way to do it. You’re hoping that this content connects to your target audience and gives them something that they’re looking for: Information about products and services, answers to important questions, etc. Your content is a form of marketing on multiple fronts, whether you’re looking at search engine optimization with keywords or simply putting content on platforms or apps that your target audience already uses.
One important thing to remember, if you want to connect with different age groups, is that they all use the Internet very differently. This means that you likely need content on multiple platforms to accomplish your goals.
Young people use traditional search engines less often
One example of this comes from Gen Z internet users. Google has controlled more than 90% of the search engine market share for over a decade now. For many people, it is the first search engine that they turn to when they are looking for information, products or services.
But one study found that 40% of Gen Z internet users don’t turn to search engines at all. Instead, they use apps like Instagram or TikTok. They may not even consider a dedicated search engine, and that may be connected to Google slightly falling in market share in recent years. Many of these young users have grown up with social media as part of the internet experience, while older users did not, so their approach is much different.
Breaking down different social media sites
But it’s not just a dichotomy between search engines and social media. Even when you look at the different social media platforms, you’ll find that age ranges are much different.
For example, the greatest percentage of those who use Instagram were between 18 and 29 years old, at 76%. Meanwhile, the greatest percentage of those using Facebook were between 30 and 49 years old, at 78%. A platform like Snapchat shows significant use by those from 18 to 29, at 65%, but virtually no one over 65 uses it, coming in at just 4%.
These are just a few examples of the statistics, which do change from year to year. But they help to show why it’s important to carefully consider your target audience when deciding what platforms to use.
