Foursquare Gets New Homepage, Features
Many companies are competing for your attention when it comes to local search, and it appears that Foursquare isn’t looking to be left out in the cold. A recent post on the Foursquare Blog heralds the arrival of a new home page for the company, offering not just a bold new look but also new functionality that improves the usefulness of the site.
If you’ve been spending all of your local search time on Google or Yelp, now might be a good time to give Foursquare another shot – and if you’re a site owner that relies on local traffic, it may be a good idea to take a look at what Foursquare is now offering.
Different Suggestions Based on Time, Day
Right on the Foursquare homepage, you’ll see recommendations for nearby businesses of your chosen category based on your current location, as well as special offers and promotions. However, the new twist is that Foursquare will base its recommendations in part on the day and time. For example, searching on a weekend evening will show you the best bars, night clubs and late-night diners in the area, while searching on a Sunday morning might reveal places to have brunch.
If you’re actually signed in to Foursquare, you’ll also see a map above the individual categories and listings with locations where friends have checked in and locations that friends actually recommend.
It’s worth noting that the change to the Foursquare homepage is primarily designed to benefit desktop and laptop PC users, though the majority of Foursquare users are on mobile.
