Most Google Searches Are Nothing New
How many times have you searched for the same thing on Google? Odds are, you’ve done it a lot. Maybe you use Google to get the local news or weather and, rather than using an app or the related links, you just search “local weather” or “local news” every morning. Maybe you tend to shop for the same types of products, so you’re always browsing for them, and that means making the same searches. Perhaps you just use Google to find your favorite websites, so you search the same site names every day.
You don’t have to do any of this, of course. You can use bookmarks, apps and many other tools to get this information without running a search. However, many people do use Google just because it seems simple enough and they’re used to doing it. That’s one of the reasons the site gets so many hits every day. But how many searches are actually new?
Tracking the Statistics
Statistics show that Google gets roughly 2 trillion annual searches. It’s a staggering amount. With large numbers, people tend to think of things like million, billion and trillion all on the same realm, but they’re nowhere near each other. That’s a massive amount of search traffic.
Breaking it down a bit further shows that there are 63,000 searches every single second. In the time it took you to read this far, hundreds of thousands of searches have happened. Every minute, there are 3.8 million more. If you track it out to a single average hour, that’s 228 million. This is a level of traffic that could barely be imagined when the site first launched.
But how much is new? Not much. It’s probably about 15%. This means that 85% of all searches are just for terms that people have already searched. Clearly, tracking search trends is beneficial because people are recycling the same words and phrases over and over and over again. You can target these on your site or blog to increase your own traffic.
It is a little harder to pinpoint how many searches any single person makes per day. Some have said it could be just three or four. However, that’s a global average. Someone without internet access makes zero. Someone else who works in the tech industry may make dozens. Lifestyle, access and career focus have a lot to do with it. Plus, as noted above, the rise of modern smartphone apps and other such technologies may lower the amount of searches, even among those who use technology all the time.
