Which age groups use popular social media platforms?
If you’re considering social media marketing, it is important to identify your audience. You need to know exactly who the content is for so that you can tailor it to be as effective as possible. Part of the equation – especially when it comes to social media – is just to look at different age brackets. What social media platforms do they use? Where is your target audience going to be looking? How do you get your ads or content in front of them?
After all, you do not have to do social media marketing across all of the most popular platforms. You could pick specific apps that work the best for your company, your products and your services. But it all depends on what audience you’re focusing on, so let’s take a look at how the demographics break down across some of the more popular platforms.
18 to 29
Younger social media users, from 18 to 29 years old, are most likely to be on Snapchat, at 41%. The next 35% of them use TikTok, while 32% use Instagram.
30 to 39
When people reach their 30s, these trends change. Users are most likely to be on LinkedIn or Twitter, both of which come in at 34%. Snapchat is next at 33%, followed by Instagram at 32%.
40 to 49
By middle age, people use LinkedIn the most, at 25%. But this is also when Facebook becomes more prominent, at 22%. Twitter is also used, though just at 21%.
50 to 59 years
If your target audience is in their 50s, then Facebook is the best place to reach them, at 29%. LinkedIn and Pinterest come next, at 24%.
Keeping an eye on the changes
The stats listed above can help you see how people are using social media right now. But it’s also important to remember that these trends will change over time. Social media platforms always rise and fall – just look at the history of MySpace or Xanga.
For example, it is no surprise that Facebook is more popular with older age groups. It has been around for 20 years. This makes it a well-established brand with a massive user base, but it also means that it is most popular with people who were in college in the early 2000s. If your products are focused on students who are in college today, then you need to go with other platforms entirely. They are simply not using Facebook – at least not to the same extent.
