New Google update targets low-quality content
When asked how their SEO performance has looked in recent months, most people cite moderate improvement. In one study, this was true for 48% of respondents—almost half of the entire group. Another 15% claimed that they saw significant improvement.
However, on the other side of the equation, 22% claimed they saw no change, 6% reported a moderate decline, and a final 3% claimed that there had been a major decline in their SEO performance. Much of this is due to a reduction in rankings on search engine results pages (SERPs). In fact, many industry experts say that SERP volatility has been at an incredibly high level—with some pages declining drastically, others declining and then recovering, and still others seeing increases in traffic. Part of the reason for this current volatility is that Google has updated its algorithm.
Avoiding low-quality content
One key component of this update is that Google is trying to put less of a priority on low-quality content. This hasn’t worked perfectly, so some sites with high-quality content have also seen a reduction in traffic numbers. There’s always a bit of an adjustment after the algorithms are updated. But it’s clear that Google is trying to avoid low-quality content and is certainly not just focusing on an abundance of keywords or other simplistic details. The focus is on whether or not the content provides value to the reader.
What this means for you is that there has never been a time when it was more important to have high-quality content that really connects with your target audience. If Google believes that you’re trying to artificially increase your ranking by spamming your own site with low-quality content stuffed with keywords, it’s not actually going to help. In some cases, you could see a drastic reduction in traffic despite your efforts. Some sites that previously had incredibly high traffic levels have seen all of that fall off in just months. It does not take long.
