4 tips for increasing website engagement
When it comes to website engagement, your website is always going to have a bounce rate. These are people who navigate to your site, perhaps through a link on a search engine results page (SERP), and immediately leave. They never engage with the site at all.
It can be a red flag if your bounce rate is really high, but it is never going to be zero. That being said, there are ways that you can design your site to get a higher level of engagement. You may be able to fix some of the things that are driving people away from the site or do things to keep them on the site longer. This can be highly beneficial for your business, so let’s take a look at four ways you can approach this issue.
Focus on mobile design
To start with, remember that many people are using their mobile phones to access your website. This is true whether they are coming from social media platforms, search results, newsletters, or other sources.
As such, you have to have a design that works well on mobile devices. Even if you design the site on a desktop, always test it on a cellphone. For instance, write your content in a way that makes it easy for the user to scroll, scan, and find the information they need.
Make sure navigation options are clear
One of the top reasons people leave a website is because they arrive and cannot find the information that they want. People are busy. They have little patience. They have short attention spans.
If the navigation is not clear, they are just going to back out and try another site. But if you prioritize navigation and ensure that the site works in a way that is logical and intuitive to the user, they are more likely to keep looking for the information they need.
Check load times and broken site features
Similarly, people expect fast load times. You always want to check your site to make sure that it is working very quickly. If it takes more than a few seconds to load, many users will already have left. Your site could have an incredible amount of important information for them, but they are never going to see it.
Additionally, check features like links, videos, and images to make sure that they are all working correctly. If these features will not load, it makes your site look unprofessional. It can also slow down the loading times for the overall page, which again is going to force users away.
Implement a call to action
When you want to create a specific type of engagement, like getting a user to make a purchase or contact you, do it with a call to action. Explicitly tell the user to take a certain step and make it easy for them to do so.
For instance, close an article about a certain product by inviting them to purchase it, especially if there is a limited-time deal. Include a link so that they can easily add it to their cart or visit the product page. If you want them to contact you, give them an on-site contact form, a phone number, a social media link, an email link, and other such elements.
Remember that the user does not want to have to take any extra steps or figure anything out on their own. Ask them to take a certain action and then make it clear and obvious how they can do so.
