3 types of abandoned cart emails
Abandoned cart emails can be an important part of your email marketing program. Did you know that up to seven out of 10 shoppers will abandon a cart? This simply means they will add products to an online shopping cart, but then they will exit the page without actually purchasing anything or checking out. They may be shopping as a guest, or they may be logged into their account. They simply did not complete the purchase.
An abandoned cart email is an effort to get them to return to the site and make that purchase. Even if it does not work in 100% of cases, it can significantly increase your conversion rates. After all, there are a wide range of reasons why a consumer may abandon their cart, such as:
- Technical glitches, such as the website or the internet crashing
- Getting distracted by another site or another option
- Having their attention drawn by something else around them, especially if they are shopping on their phone
- Believing that they did complete the purchase, even though they did not
- Feeling that the products are actually too expensive once they have added them to the cart
By sending the consumer an email, you may be able to get them to finish that purchase and increase the amount of business you get through your website. There are three different types of emails to consider.
The initial reminder
First and foremost, the consumer may have simply gotten distracted, forgotten about their cart or inadvertently left the site before clicking purchase. A simple reminder may inform them of this oversight. It can include a link to the cart, making it easy for them to return and complete the purchase. This email can be a simple call to action along with the link.
Creating a deadline
With many ecommerce sites, a cart is only going to hold items for a certain amount of time. After that, it expires and the items are removed. In other cases, those items may go out of stock. Either way, you can use this to inform the user of the deadline. If you tell them that they only have 24 hours to finish the purchase, for example, it can create a level of urgency that gets them to act.
Offering a discount
Finally, consumers do sometimes claim that shipping costs were too high or that the total price for all of the items they added to the cart was more than they were expecting. An effective way to combat this can be offering them discounts or coupons. You may send them a third email that gives them 10% off their order or access to free shipping using a code, for instance.
