Should you still use Facebook for social media marketing?
Social media has certainly evolved over the years, as has the role that it plays in people’s lives. Early social media platforms like Xanga or MySpace experienced their heydays and then faded from popularity. Some social media apps, such as Vine, were relatively short-lived, similar to a band that is a one-hit wonder. At the same time, other platforms, such as Facebook, have grown massively and begun to dominate the social media landscape. In fact, when many people talk about social media in general, all they are really referring to is Facebook, along with the other properties owned by Meta, such as Instagram or Messenger.
But Facebook itself is now around 20 years old. Is it still a viable type of social media? Or has it run its course, and is it bound to fade like its predecessors? If you are doing social media marketing in 2025, should you still be focusing on Facebook?
Key statistics
There are those who argue that Facebook is still the most important platform, and some of the statistics do seem to back this up. For instance, the top visited websites in the United States are Google, YouTube, and then Facebook in third place. As popular as things like Instagram and TikTok are, they simply do not get that much traffic.
On a global scale, Facebook also has the most users, with over 3 billion active profiles. Last year, the company made $164.5 billion in ad revenue. It is clear that Facebook is still a social media giant, rather than a company that is becoming irrelevant.
A family of Facebook apps
Another thing to consider is that Meta, the company that owns Facebook, also owns other apps like Instagram. So in some cases, when Facebook is not ranked number one, it is just competing with itself. For example, when you look at product discovery and online commerce, Facebook is in second place according to some statistics. But the app that is in first place, just one percentage point higher, is Instagram. Meta owns both of these properties, so it is easy to integrate your social media marketing across both of them.
Age does matter
One important thing to keep in mind, however, is your own target audience. How old are the users that you are targeting for your goods and services? This could play a big role in whether or not Facebook is right for you.
For instance, if your target audience includes Baby Boomers, members of Generation X, or Millennials, they all use Facebook more than any other platform. However, if your target audience is younger individuals in Gen Z, Facebook comes in third. They are more likely to use Instagram or TikTok.
It will also be important to keep an eye on this trend moving forward. Facebook has already had a significant amount of longevity. But if young users are less likely to adapt to the platform and more likely to seek other types of social media, things could change in the near future. It may be necessary to adjust your social media marketing strategy.
