What is evergreen content and how does it help?
When it comes to search engine optimization, there are many different types of content to consider. Some of it is timely. This includes news reports or articles relating to recent industry trends. These are often presented as blog posts. The idea is to get the most current and relevant information in front of the reader.
On the other side of the spectrum, however, is evergreen content. This is not connected to any specific timeframe. It should be as relevant a year from now as it is today. You can still post evergreen content in blogs, but it is also commonly posted as on-site content. It is not going to change. Readers will keep finding it, and it will continue to bring in organic traffic.
The foundation of SEO
In many ways, evergreen content can be the foundation of your SEO process. There is information about your company or your industry that readers will always be looking for. It will always be as important and relevant as it is right now, and you are always going to have a certain percentage of search traffic focused on that information.
For instance, perhaps your company makes down coats for backcountry hiking and backpacking. Readers are always going to be looking for information about the benefits of down as opposed to other materials, such as its relatively light weight. They are always going to be interested in what temperatures it can be used in. Different jackets may be rated for use in different temperatures, so the specific information will change, but the general idea that the reader is trying to learn about will be the same.
In that sense, these are educational pieces. They are designed for someone who is relatively new to your business. These readers may not know as much about your products or services. They may never have made a purchase before.
These readers are doing research and dipping their toes in the water. Your evergreen content should introduce them to the core qualities of your company or your products. It should answer common questions that people have. It should provide information about the main focus of your business or the problem you solve for your consumers.
Building out from evergreen content
That being said, evergreen content is not all that you need. You can use it as a foundation and build out from there.
For instance, there may be a new development in the industry that allows you to make coats that are lighter or that provide adequate warmth at lower temperatures. You can talk about these new materials or new design processes.
There may also be trends in the industry. Consumers may be interested in the types of jackets being purchased in 2026, for example—the styles, colors, designs, etc. That trend will not be nearly as important five years from now, but you can still create useful content that guides people right now. In 2031, you will ideally be writing new content about current trends at that time.
So you do not have to neglect timely content. It’s still important. But you also do not want to be so aligned with it that all of your content is going to look outdated 12 months from now. By balancing out your overall content plan with evergreen pieces, you ensure that your site continues to rank highly and generate organic traffic long-term.
