SEO still accounts for most website traffic
It is no secret that the way people approach the internet has been changing. To some degree, this started with social media, which brought users together on one platform. Today, people carry out searches on specific platforms like Amazon or TikTok. They may conduct searches on Instagram, Facebook, and similar sites and apps. The implementation of generative AI has also changed things, as users will sometimes use programs like ChatGPT to search for information without visiting a traditional search engine at all.
There are those who have claimed that these changes have made SEO tactics irrelevant, but the statistics tell an entirely different story. Despite the rise of other popular platforms, the majority of website traffic still comes from Google. According to some studies, Google has about 63.4% of all web traffic in the United States—or roughly two-thirds of the total. So, while SEO may look a bit different today, it is still the main tool in your arsenal when you are trying to drive more traffic to your website.
Where do the other sites rank?
For the sake of comparison, it is important to look at how much web traffic comes from other sources. For instance, as noted above, people do conduct searches on Amazon, but that only accounts for 0.82% of web traffic—or less than 1% of the total. Yahoo has slightly more at 1.9%, and Reddit gets a full 2.95%. Facebook, the world’s largest social media platform with billions of users, still only accounts for 3.54%. These figures come from a study examining web traffic data from 2024.
So, for as much as people have discussed how traffic has shifted to other platforms, it is clear from the statistics that most of it has not. These other platforms together do not even make up half of all web traffic, and most of them receive very little compared to Google.
It is also important to note that you can use some of these other sites alongside search engine optimization. A blog post that is created with SEO in mind can drive organic traffic to your site, but it can also be shared on a social media platform like Facebook. In this light, your goal does not necessarily have to be shifting to new platforms, but rather learning how to incorporate them into the SEO efforts you are already carrying out.
