How white space makes your web content more effective
When many people consider their web content in the context of web design, they are really just thinking about the specific content they want to put on the site for the reader. They know that it is very important to use correct keywords for search engine optimization (SEO) purposes. They also know that this content needs to be helpful and informative to the reader, encouraging them to stay on the site and view it as a trustworthy resource.
All of this is true, but it is also wise to think about white space, or negative space. This is the area around your web content. It can be utilized in numerous ways, and it does not necessarily contain anything specific for the reader. It is just empty space. Even so, there are some ways in which it makes your web content much more effective.
Wide margins
One example is that many websites are designed with wide margins on each side of the text. Each margin may take up 25 percent of the page. The text in the middle actually only takes up 50 percent of the total space, arranged in a column.
One of the benefits here is that it makes the text look less intimidating to the reader. If they click on your landing page and it is covered in text from one side to the other, the wall of text looks daunting and unapproachable. This can lead to a high bounce rate, as many people who click on your link quickly bail and seek information elsewhere.
White space between text blocks
Next, you may want to consider leaving additional white space between sections on the page. You may have multiple text blocks, each with their own header. White space can help to clearly define them, setting different ideas or pieces of information apart from one another.
A major advantage here is that it makes it easier for your reader to scan the page. They may be looking for something specific, like a product description or a certain use case for the products that your company sells. They do not want to read every word on the page. But if they can quickly skim through different sections and find what they are looking for, they are more likely to use your website as a resource.
A modern style
Finally, you just need to consider the way that webpages are designed in the modern era, and many of them already use white space extensively. Failing to do so can make your page look outdated, which may make people think it is less trustworthy. Even if all of the information on that page is completely up to date and relevant, you have to consider the impression that the page makes on your reader and how that impression will define how they see your company or view your brand.
