How does Answer Engine Optimization work?
Answer engine optimization and search engine optimization are related, but operate differently. The overall goal of SEO for decades has been leading the user to a specific website. The user types in a keyword or a keyword phrase. They are provided with relevant links that they can click as they seek to learn more. The goal of SEO is to drive traffic to websites, typically by using the correct keywords that the target audience is likely to search for. Keyword analysis is a crucial part of the process.
All of this is still important today and will continue to be so, but there has been a shift to answer engine optimization (AEO). This is largely driven by artificial intelligence (AI), and it recognizes the fact that many people will now type a question into the search bar and receive an answer in an AI generated overview. As a result, they may not click on a link at all. They simply get the answer they are looking for in the browser.
This does not mean that your content is now irrelevant. It just means that, in order to show up, you need to focus on providing answers to the questions your target audience is asking.
Authoritative resources
The key thing to remember, especially when looking at Google’s AI overviews, is that they come with authoritative resources in a list. Generally, when someone types a question into the search bar, they will get a few sentences that answer their question directly below the bar, on the left-hand side of the screen.
Google uses a small star emblem and a header saying “AI overview” to let the user know that this answer has been compiled by AI. As such, it could be incorrect or it may not be exactly what the user is looking for. The AI engine has simply compiled the data that it has found on the Internet, drawing from other sources that already exist.
In order to help the reader, Google then lists these sources on the right-hand side of the screen. They will generally list three sources at the top, with a button below saying that the user can click further to see all relevant sources.
As such, if your content is focused around questions that users are likely to ask, and if it provides them with concise answers, you can show up as an authoritative resource on that list. The user may read the two or three sentences that answer their question, but they may want to learn more or double check the information to be sure that it is authentic and correct. That is when they click through your link, so you can still generate web traffic through AEO the same way that you can through SEO.
A changing landscape
This is just one of the ways that AI has changed the search process in 2025, and it will continue to do so. It is crucial to understand how these changes take place. You need to know how to address both answer engine optimization and standard SEO tactics to get the most out of your content.
