The Downsides of AI Writing
Have you ever thought about letting an AI write your website? Artificial intelligence has been used in many different areas, and AI writing is the newest area where it has begun to pick up steam. People have used these systems to write everything from computer code to novels. They have shown that they can string words together in a coherent way, and they have even taken steps toward learning how to write proficiently. They can be given a multitude of topics, and internet access makes it possible for the AI to learn about virtually anything.
But experts warn that we shouldn’t fully embrace AI writing just yet. There are still some major drawbacks, and it’s unclear if AI will ever be able to give you what you would get with a human writer.
A Misdirected AI Is Useless
First and foremost, someone still has to direct the AI system. What topic will it write about? What subjects will it address? What keywords will it use? Where will it learn about this topic? If any small detail is slightly off, a human would recognize that the content didn’t work almost instantly. The AI program, though, would just keep churning out inaccurate content. This means that it won’t be effective and may actually hold your company back. Without a team paying careful attention, it could do more harm than good.
AI Writing May Feel Too Generic and Sterile
Additionally, when you have a computer write for you, it still sounds like a computer. It’s often said to be incredibly sterile and boring. It doesn’t reflect your branding and your mission, and it doesn’t have your personality. These are important things for a business, helping to define their public image. Even an AI that technically uses all of the correct words may not have the impact you’re looking for. A person reading that content will know it was written by a computer. It won’t feel real and authentic.
AI Writing Makes Everyone Sound the Same
One way in which AI is often used is in replying to email messages. The trouble, though, is that people all sound the same. Experts note that the same handful of responses is always offered to nearly anyone writing a message in Gmail, for instance. If you use those replies, they’re the same as millions of other people are using at the same time. Again, it may get the job done, but there’s no personality. There’s no connection. The person reading the reply knows that you didn’t even take the time to write it. In a world where personal connection is so important, this doesn’t work. And that’s just for simple email messages, not even site content or marketing content.
The AI Can’t Think
Finally, the AI has a serious issue: It may seem like it can think and learn, but it can’t. Artificial intelligence regurgitates what it has been told. It doesn’t refine its views, and it doesn’t stop to ponder if there’s a better way to communicate something. The result the same sterile, soulless copy that it’s been instructed to create. This means there is no innovation and no personality. It gives the illusion of a sentient being, but it’s not. AI may work well for answering specific and direct questions, but it struggles to go beyond that because it lacks the human capacity that is so important in writing.
