What Is Organic Traffic?
As you research how to get more traffic to your website, you’ve probably run into people talking about organic traffic. They note that you can use search engine optimization (SEO) to increase your rankings and get more organic traffic, which helps your site grow. They also note that organic traffic is more likely to get you leads because of the interest these people have already expressed.
But have you ever wondered exactly what organic traffic looks like or why you are trying to get it? What does this term mean and why is it so important for your business? It’s fairly simple, but an understanding of this goal from the very beginning will help you know exactly what steps you’ll need to take.
Traffic From Search Results
Organic web traffic is simply traffic that comes from a search results page. The alternative is traffic that is being driven to your site intentionally, from an external source. The most obvious example of this is through ad placement. If you pay to put PPC ads in front of potential users and then some of them click the ad and navigate to your site, this is not organic traffic. If they type in relevant keywords and then click on a result that leads them to your site, that is the organic traffic you’re looking for. It is happening naturally, as part of the search process.
The first reason why organic traffic is so good is that these are individuals who are intentionally typing in keywords related to the goods and services that you offer. They likely already want to make a purchase from you or from the competition. They are intentionally researching their options. When your keywords work and this leads them to your site, they are already predisposed to make some sort of purchase. Your site still has to make that conversion, but you’re not simply trying to convince a random user who may not be interested, which is what you’re trying to do with ads. With organic traffic, you know that you already have your target audience, which often makes it more likely that you’re going to get that conversion.
There are also a lot of hurdles to seeking organic traffic, starting with the fact that you have a lot of competition. There are only so many search results on each page. Most people never leave that first page. If your site gets buried, you’re not going to get organic traffic because it will be going elsewhere. Most users are not going to navigate all the way to the 3rd or 4th page to find your results.
So What Can You Do?
All of this leads you to the importance of a strong SEO strategy. Organic traffic comes from search engine optimization. You need your site to rank as high as possible so that you get the best results. If you have no SEO strategy, this is virtually guaranteed not to happen. There are simply too many other sites competing for that traffic. The days of the internet being a place where anyone could get discovered are over. With this many options, you have to take direct and intentional action to help people find you, and you do that with SEO. These are your best possible targets because, as noted above, they are already predisposed to buy, and you need to work hard to get them to your site.
