Conflicting claims about AI tools using markdown files
Markdown files are designed around AI crawlers. Rather than being focused on just the human reader, these files are created with certain signals for machine reading. Things like JavaScript and CSS are often removed. This can make a markdown file much different than a traditional HTML file. The goal is that it will be easier for AI bots to read the site and consider the information, which should theoretically help to improve AI citations for companies that are using these specific markdown files.
But is that actually happening? There are many conflicting claims, with some saying that these markdown files are useful, while others claim that there is not a significant difference.
Cloudflare supports the use of markdown files
On one side, companies like Cloudflare have said that markdown’s structure is “ideal for AI processing.” They say that this provides better results, reduces token waste and helps to efficiently connect to modern AI tools.
However, there are others that disagree, such as those at Search Engine Journal. Citing conversations on Reddit, they note that it is not clear that markdown files are actually having a significant impact. They specifically cite a lack of clear success stories, and they also express issues with the reliability of markdown files. In short, would it be possible for site owners to try to game the system by putting specific content into markdown files that did not necessarily reflect what the reader was seeing?
What Google’s John Mueller says
Google’s John Mueller has recently weighed in on this, noting that he used test sites. He did have crawlers on these sites looking at markdown files, but these were generally just SEO tools.
The advice that he gave is to track the statistics to see if AI bots are actually interacting with these sites and requesting the markdown files. In short, it seems that more evidence is needed, as different companies seem to have a very different perspective on the usefulness of these files when it comes to AI agents.
Addressing your content
Part of the issue here is simply that these AI tools are still relatively new. They have been changing the SEO landscape. However, it will take time to gather years of statistical data that can back up just how SEO and AI work together. This includes the use of markdown files and other tools.
Here at Content Customs, we can help you stay on top of these changes and consider the way that the market is shifting. We are always reading the most recent reports to determine how you can get the best results for your site. Even strictly looking at traditional SEO, there have always been changes due to Google updates over the years.
