Just last week, we talked about some major upgrades coming to Apple’s mobile operating system iOS6, namely a collaboration with Yelp that will allow Siri users to instantly retrieve menus, locations, prices, reviews and other information about local restaurants.

Now, Google is facing what might be its largest legal battle yet, as it prepares to defend itself against European Union charges that it’s been abusing its market power and violating EU antitrust laws.
The local business online review industry is absolutely booming, if the most recent earnings report from Yelp is any indication. An online urban guide and business review site founded in October of 2004, Yelp brought in an astounding $46 million in the first quarter of 2013, up almost 70% from the same quarter in 2012.
When it comes to business recommendation sites, Yelp is undoubtedly the leader. It currently has around 86,000 local business accounts, and it attracts 135 million monthly visitors. Companies strive for good reviews on the site, as Yelp ratings can have a huge effect on sales.
Under the fresh direction of Marissa Mayer, Yahoo has just announced a brand new advertising unit that should prove interesting to internet marketers while allowing Yahoo to profit off its search business in ways it’s simply been unable to with Microsoft.
