Google to Phase Out AdSense Apps
AdSense is the major player in online advertising, as the Google-powered platform makes it simple to get ads in front of numerous eyes. Over the years, it has shifted to become even more focused on mobile devices. Reports from Google indicate that more than 1 out of every 3 people who use AdSense to create ads do it with their mobile devices. As the same time, about 70% of users who then see those ads also do so on smartphones and other mobile devices. It’s clear that people like the ability to access the internet on the go, whether they’re running businesses, shopping for new products, looking for local services or simply checking up on social media profiles. The web really is a completely mobile experience in 2019.
With that in mind, it’s important to note that there are some major changes coming by the end of the year. Google just announced that they’re going to phase out the apps they have been using on both Android and IOS device, instead shifting their focus to the mobile web interface. You’ll still be able to use AdSense through this interface, but this will change how you do it. It also means that, as the apps get taken down by the close of 2019 — there’s no specific date as of yet — the company will not support them or offer future updates. Users will need to make the switch.
Why the Change?
Clearly, the numbers show that AdSense is working. There’s the old adage about not trying to fix something that isn’t broken. Why is Google going to make this change and force people to comply?
They may potentially be looking into solutions that are more passive and require less regular input from the user. They want the user to run their business while Google runs their ads. As they noted in their official release: “Our vision is an AdSense that does more to keep your account healthy, letting you focus on creating great content, and comes to you when issues or opportunities need your attention. With this in mind, we have reviewed our mobile strategy…We look forward to leveraging great new web technologies to deliver an even better, more automated, and more useful mobile experience.”
They’re not abandoning it, of course. They’re attempting to make it stronger. Or, at least, that’s the way that they’re trying to spin this change right now. As far as results are concerned, it remains to be seen if this will prove to be an effective course of action. An automated, passive experience could give Google more control, but it also puts more pressure on their programs and systems to get it right.
It also sounds like they want to get away from having separate programs for Android and IOS devices. Rather than splitting things into two different apps, they’d rather have it all contained in one web application that anyone can use, on any device. “By investing in a common web application that supports all platforms, we will be able to deliver AdSense features optimized for mobile much faster than we can today,” they added in the press release.
Looking to the Future
Again, the proof will be in the results. Will it really be faster and more efficient, or will people just wish they hadn’t tried to fix something that wasn’t broken? Will Google benefit by including Apple users without giving them a specific IOS app? Will the automated approach be as effective as they want it to be?
