How much do social media trends matter?
As a business owner, it may be clear to you that you need to focus on social media marketing. There are billions of people online every day, so there’s a massive potential audience. Social media gives you unique opportunities to get marketing materials and other information in front of these individuals, and you can even directly interact with them. In this sense, it can build brand awareness and influence sales.
But social media, like everything else on the internet, is always changing. It is subject to trends.
For instance, there was a time when MySpace was the most popular social media site. But it has since fallen all the way out of the top 10. Sites like YouTube and Facebook are now used more often than any others. Newer sites, such as TikTok, have been on the rise in recent years. So how much do you need to pay attention to the downfall of MySpace or the sudden rise of TikTok when planning out your social media marketing campaign?
Identifying your target audience
Social media trends can be important. As a site gets more popular and gains more users, it’s naturally going to help you get more exposure. If a site is shrinking, and its popularity is waning, you may not want to put as much money into marketing on that platform.
But the biggest key is simply to know what your target audience looks like and what sites, apps or platforms they tend to use.
For instance, although there are people in every age group on TikTok, its rise has largely been due to the influx of young users. If you’re looking to market to people who are college students, for instance, TikTok may be your best bet.
On the other side of the coin, Facebook tends to attract older users. Part of this is simply because it’s been around for 20 years. People who signed up for Facebook in their 20s when it first emerged are now going to be in their 40s.
So if your products and services are marketed toward parents or grandparents, then Facebook may get you more traction and a better level of exposure to your actual target audience. But if you’re trying to market to young people and putting those ads on Facebook, you may find that the same level of connection just isn’t there. That’s when you need to expand your marketing to multiple platforms.
