What makes your website less user-friendly?
A user-friendly website is incredibly important. One of the biggest reasons for a site with a high bounce rate (in other words, people who leave quickly after arriving) is that the site isn’t very user-friendly or easy to navigate. People who arrive at the site will immediately feel confused or overwhelmed, and they’re not going to take the time to figure it out. They’re just going to click the back button, return to the list of search options, and choose another website. You only get a few seconds to make that first impression.
So what mistakes do you want to avoid? Below are a few examples to keep in mind.
Features that are hard to use
First and foremost, make the website as easy to use as possible. One potential issue is when hyperlinks are too small to click easily. Another issue is when the navigation isn’t intuitive, so people don’t know where to find the information they’re looking for. The site should be as simple as possible, while still accomplishing your business’s goals.
The wrong type of content
You also have to think carefully about the type of content your users are expecting. In many situations, for example, readers want content that is easy to scan so they can find the important details that they’re searching for. This is why it’s important to break text up with paragraphs, subheadings, lists, and things of this nature.
No search option
One reason for a high bounce rate on commercial sites is that users want to type terms into an inherent search function on the site. Maybe they’re looking for a specific product, for instance. If there is no search function, they may be unwilling to browse the site looking for the item that they’re after. They’ll just try another retailer.
Making the user think more
As a general rule, you just want to remember that someone who has to think about what they’re doing on your website is more likely to get frustrated with the site itself. If you can reduce the amount of thinking the reader has to do by making your site design intuitive and easy, people will be much happier with the results and stay on the site longer.
